The Gasworks Sudbury was built around 1874 and produced gas for Sudbury Hall and many houses in the village, until being dismantled in the 1930s and falling into disrepair. In 2013, a group of local volunteers set out to rescue the building from collapse.
Ten years later, with support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and others, the building has been restored to its former glory, and is now open to the public.
GCA have been involved throughout the process, providing both modern structural engineering design for the new circular event space, and conservation engineering to support the retention of the existing structure.
Our clean, contemporary design for the new circular steel frame using cutting edge design methods to create a minimalist steel frame with unobtrusive connections.
Our involvement in the careful repair and restoration of the cast and wrought-iron roof structure retained this spectacular example of efficient design – an incredible example of Victorian ingenuity.
